Sybase Inc. is company that provides the Sybase database management system that competes with the Oracle Database.

History

Sybase Corporation developed the Sybase SQL Server relational database management system in 1987.

Database engines

Sybase offers the following database storage engines:

Sybase ASE

Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), usually referred to as just "Sybase", is a row-based relational database engine like Oracle, SQL Server, etc.

Sybase IQ

Sybase Adaptive Server IQ is Sybase's Data Warehousing product. IQ stores data in columns instead of rows like traditional databases. In doing so, it can achieve much higher compression ratios and fast BI-type queries at the expense of slower load and update times.

Conversion to/from Oracle

  • Oracle's Migration Workbench tool can be used to convert Sybase databases to Oracle (database layer only).
  • ANTs Software provides an ANTs Compatibility Server that allow users to "rehost" Sybase applications directly onto Oracle with no application rewrites. This is a great way to automate the database migration process and provide cost savings for your organization.
  • Ispirer MnMTK Ispirer Migration and Modernization Toolkit (Ispirer MnMTK) automatically migrates the entire database schema (tables, views, stored procedures, functions, triggers, etc.) and transfers data from Sybase ASE, Sybase ASA, Sybase IQ to Oracle and vice versa.
