This could be a problem with the ksh version you're running. What version version of Linux and ksh are you using?
Have you checked for updates to ksh that could be installed?
For example in OL6 , there was this problem with ksh that had to be patched. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1247383
