Not all DBAs are platform DBAs. Not all DBAs are application DBAs. Not all DBAs do DBA-Ops.
Some of us are all 3. Some are one but not any of the others.. (I do all 3 and enjoy application DBA work much more than platform DBA work)
*ANY* DBA and I stress **any* *DBA that thinks they can get by doing platform/infrastructure work has a rude awakening in store. Ops/Application work is the future of the DBA role as systems such as Exadata are already exemplifying with automated backup scripts, push button database deployments. While this technology is early still, its only going to get "worse" / "better" (depending on your viewpoint) . Just like trade jobs are moving toward robotics and automation, a lot of platform operations are moving toward automated solutions.
For DBAs in Oracle and wider adoption of Exadata, that means roles like "Database Machine Administrator" for Platform work and DBA Ops/Applications for applications type work.
I completely agree it is very early in this change still, but it is coming. As Exadata improves and TCO goes down, companies will be hard pressed to justify licensing costs on non-exadata.
Ultimately, the idea that a job role is only ever "this" or "that" is being upended and we need to be able to change and realize that *Database Administrator *hasn't got much life left in it as far as solely standing up, cloning, backing up, restoring databases (platform work). Everyone should be getting involved in operations, applications that use the database and the teams using the database.
I say this as someone who has been an Oracle DBA for 20+ years and am currently evaluating a signiicant career change myself.
