Subject: Any problems using Anti Virus software?

Are there any known problems using Antivirus software on a Windows database server?
Management won't exclude the Oracle database datafiles and log files.

Thanks!

Yes. Performance will go in the toilet. You will need to more than double the spindles to get reasonable performance. Management sounds like they don't understand what Oracle datafiles are and what a virus is. I guess you could attempt to help them understand. Lets say a virus "infects" an Oracle datafile, now what? It isn't run as an executable, the worse case is now the file is corrupt and you will have to restore from tape. The antivirus software probably wouldn't protect you from that anyway.

We had a customer when I was with a different company that had it turned on and their very fast server with plenty of disks was = to a server costing about a quarter as much in terms of performance. Once they excluded the oracle data and log and control files all was right with the world. Jim
