According to Note: 148054.1, Oracle 8.1.7.x goes out of Error Correction Support (ECS) next Friday so it would probably be worth giving serious consideration to going to 9i at the earliest opportunity.

You can still raise support calls on 8.1.7.x until 31-Dec-2007 but unless it's something with a known fix then you'll probably land up being told to migrate to a version still in ECS and raise a new call if you still have the problem. See the note for more info on what you get at each level of support.
