1st and 4th normal forms would apply here. Basically, if you have 20 columns in a table I doubt you're properly normalized, although you could easily still be messed up with less columns if you didn't design it properly. Of course, if everything were designed well in the first place there would be near as much demand for DBAs, hehe.
