My experience. It is not always good to normalize tables to the third normal form. Some of my tables are up to the second only. This is done for some advantages. One rule I keep in mind is:
Ease of maintenance - it's easier to read data and edit data in a table if everything is in one table, rather than having to walk through pk's and fk's all over the place.
So tables that I have that will be edited often by users are often not normalized to the third normal form. Tell me if I'm wrong.
Can someone remind me what's the point of normalization anyways? I seem to have lost it somewhere between school and getting the product to the customer on-time and within budget.
Thanks.
