i've just been on this mail; but is this normall for the numbner of = messages
being flying around.
is there a way of cutting back

You'll have to recreate the control file.

o Alter database backup controlfile to trace o Edit the trace file generated in UDUMP and increase the MAXDATAFILES
o Shutdown database
o Cold Backup database
o Run the Create controlfile script
