I understood his question as if we can do it without bouncing the database. I do not know how without not supported manipulation with DD and controlfiles.

You'll have to recreate the control file.
o Alter database backup controlfile to trace
o Edit the trace file generated in UDUMP and increase
the MAXDATAFILES
o Shutdown database
o Cold Backup database
o Run the Create controlfile script
