I think that you mess up the db_files parameter and the MAXDATAFILES
parameter !!!

But I was able to change the value in the init.ora file, and bounce the database. Too risky?
Also, any opinions on preferences as to altering files to be larger vs. adding datafiles to tablespaces?

You'll have to recreate the control file.
o Alter database backup controlfile to trace
o Edit the trace file generated in UDUMP and increase
the MAXDATAFILES
o Shutdown database
o Cold Backup database
o Run the Create controlfile script
