Thanks for the advice; I've actually considered doing it this way, but who's gonna buy *that* as experience? "What Oracle projects have you worked on?" Uh, I've got a Linux box I played around with. Is the Oracle DBA job market *that* tight? If it is, terrific! Couldn't be happier. If it isn't, I'd like to know what I oughta do. Learning stuff without a real project can be a real pain in the ass (doesn't work well for me anyway).
Ultimately I'd like to do contract work, but I thought contract folk were hired for their guru status; I figured it would be wise to find an Oracle shop where they needed an extra pair of hands; where they were overburdened and wouldn't mind farming out some stuff to a junior person. That way, I get to learn a lot more from those already in the biz.

I'm all for more cake - or at least the same; but I've been talking about getting involved with Oracle for a couple years now, and I want to know what my chances are/what the landscape is. I need to get my Oracle career started. Don't worry - once I come up to speed, I'll be compensated properly or, zip-tang, off to a company where I would be compensated properly. I've got a stack of Oracle books, but haven't been able to get very far on my own, so I want to know what my options are.
Is there a "typical" path to becoming an Oracle DBA or a data modeler?
