It is not uncommon to announce your products on USENET groups, but some basic rules of etiquette should be followed if you want to be taken seriously.
At very least, put an "Announce" in the subject line, to let us know you are announcing a product. People respect straight talk.
Next, for heaven's sake don't pretend to be talking about a third party, it is insulting and instantly turns off anybody with intelligence. If its your project then say its your project. If it's not, then why are you talking about it? tell us your relationship to the product.
It also would not hurt to lurk in a group for awhile to see if anybody might be interested, or to ask questions or participate. People will look at something from somebody they know.
Spamming a lot of groups may get lots of messages out there, but its like throwing money down a well. Why not instead try a little targeting marketing and gain some respect among the crowd that is most likely to actually want your product?
