Since I live near an area with a large concentration of illegal aliens
(of the sort who take menial jobs), the "taking our jobs" folks (or
"crackers"
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20060804/news_7m4perata.html )
have targetted this area for media brouhaha. Meanwhile, the increased
border security has actually reduced the number of illegals, so
labor-intensive jobs that they would take are going unfilled. This has
hit wineries and organic farms

the hardest. I haven't seen any Minutemen picking grapes. They are
out on the Arizona border stringing up special fiber-optic sensors made
in China that can tell the difference between wind, animals and people,
with their presence effectively creating a denial-of-service attack on
infrared and buried-contact sensors the border patrol uses...

Well, H1-B abuse is a bad thing economically. No matter how much abuse there is (and there is a lot), it poisons the whole thing. (I'm not disputing that an economic illiterate could come to the same conclusion with the wrong derivation). The cost of getting caught is perceived to be much lower than the pecuniary benefit of cheating.
