No, I do not intend to treat my database like a simple collection of files, I intend to treat it like a very complex one. That is precisely why I need so called "plan B". As for taring and dropping anywhere, it is useful from time to time, especially when combined with transportable tablespaces. I must confess to cowardly copying data files using various OS utilities instead of bravely doing export and import with or without a pump. ASM is yavm (yet another volume manager) and, as such, it needs to be compared to other volume managers, like VxVM. So far, I fail to see an advantage of ASM over VxVM.
