Did you change the name of your machine? I did this and found that the TNS listener had stopped. I changed the files putting in the new name in place of the old and it worked. Files were tnsnames.ora and listener.ora.

some clues, like operating system, version of db being used and DDL.
The exact text and/or number of error messages is useful (!= "it didn't work!").
