Availability.
ok. one or more disks dies in stripe 0. You're still up, as stripe 1 is
still cranking away, twice as much as before.
Now all of your reads are off of one RAID 0 stripe, instead of either
RAID 0 stripe.
Before you manage to IDENTIFY THAT A DRIVE HAS FAILED, replaced the
failed drive on the downed stripe and completed the rebuild of the
failed RAID volume, you lose a disk in stripe 1.
you're dead.
everything since your last backup to tape, NAS, whatever ... is gone. you have to rebuild, restore, recover everything that was on the RAID 01 volume. that could be some serious downtime.
the good news, is that you no longer have any security issues, as there is no data left to worry about.
If your users can tolerate complete loss of data due to as few as 2 failed drives, go for it.
RAID 10 would tend to compartmentalize the damage. There was this boat named "Titanic" ...
might you consider using some sort of config that allows for hot sparing with automated rebuilds?
