No, it's not a stupid remark, because I thought the same thing. But you can't force the issue with Windows. The instance gets its name from the ORACLE_SID environment variable. That was set to +ASM1, upper case. I also specified +ASM1 when creating the service with oradim. Clearly, it got resolved down to a lower-case version, but I know of no way of forcing the use of uppercase (try putting quotes around the name when using Oradim, and it goes beserk).

I actually like ASM very much. And I have no problems using a manually-created ASM instance for a manually-created database; nor a DBCA-created ASM instance for a DBCA-created database. I just can't get the two 'modes' of operation to talk to each other... though Connor reports it's possible, so it must be. It's probably just the nylon underwear I'm wearing.
