This seems to be a bug in the 10.1.0.2 Version and is fixed in 10.1.0.3
If you were on 8174 , this connection would have got through..
Somehow the 10g client allowed connections only to 81740 and no releases
earlier than that.

If you have access to Metalink , log a tar and request the one-off patch
made available to rectify
this problem on 10.1.0.2
