8.1.6 is desupported.
8.1.6 has a very large number of known bugs The optimizer in 9.2 is substantially improved and will improve performance and scalability
In preparation for Oracle 10i and beyond you need to start working with iSQL*Plus
In preparation for Oracle 10i and beyond you need to start working with locally managed tablespaces
In preparation for Oracle 10i and beyond you need to start working with flashback queries

If they don't keep current with Oracle it will be harder to retain competent employees and to attract new ones.
