Eric,

the server(s) that I have 817 installed on have never had Oracle installed before. They are both new L Class HPs. One has 8170 -> 8173 -> 8174 while the other has 8170 -> 8174 (but the patch fails). And just to add to my woes, Oracle 9iR2 has just sucessfully installed - same linker, everything !

Hello Norman,

I think you understand this, but to clarify - I think Oracle's use of the "not
valid" +padtext started at 8.1.7, and that's why the patches are not needed on
your 8.1.6 system.
