Hello Norman,
I think you understand this, but to clarify - I think Oracle's use of the "not valid" +padtext started at 8.1.7, and that's why the patches are not needed on your 8.1.6 system.
I would run this by Oracle first! - but how about removing/modifying the portions of $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/lib/env_rdbms.mk that are used for large page sizes? ie don't use large pages at 8.1.7 (and then maintain a copy of your modified env_rdbms.mk file for future Oracle upgrades).
Or, install 8.1.6 on the second box as well?
