It is possible, but -as you indicate- only under certain circumstances, those being that the control files from before the resetlogs and after are still available, all archives from before and after the resetlogs are available, and you have nerves of steel.
The procedure is referred to in the Oracle doco as 'recovery through resetlogs'. It involves restoring the pre-resetlogs backup, recovering it to the change number associated with the resetlogs, switching the control files to the post-resetlogs ones, and continuing recovery.
You're right that its best to test this many times in a non-production environment first!!
