Well, I totally disagree that 8i Release 3 is 'maintenance' release. It introduced quite a few new features compared to Release 1 and even Release 2 - just check "what's new" sections in 8.1.7 docs. :)

You need to excercise upgrade with caution, strictly follow migration docs and notes and make yourself familiar with all 8.1.5 to 8.1.7 migration issues and workarounds published on MetaLink. And of course, have a full cold backup of the database and copy of original $ORACLE_HOME handy in case something goes wrong, so that you can easily revert to previous state. MetaLink note 133920.1 has a complete checklist for manual upgrades, recommended reading if you want to upgrade manually.

And you cannot install 8.1.7 over 8.1.5 into the same home without deinstalling 8.1.5 first - OUI won't let you. Either install into new home (and then you can skip copying original Oracle home) or deinstall 8.1.5 and then install 8.1.7 where previous version used to be.

Corrections and additions welcome.
