Give all those Oracle docos I see everyone recommending a miss. You want the 'big picture', fair enough... Oracle docos (I feel) tend to assume you are coming to the party with some prior knowledge, and get rather detailed very quickly.

There are lots of "friendly" resources around. Go to my site, and check 'Other Resources' for some of them. And check out 'Books' for an introduction to the general database architecture.

I'm sure others will be able to point you in yet more useful directions, too.
