I haven't installed 8.1.7 on SuSE, but I have gotten the same error on Solaris (ORA-03113...) when there are enough semaphores configured in the kernel. The Oracle minimum requirement of 100 is not always sufficient. Try bumping this number up to 500, rebuild the kernel, and reboot.
