I recently had a problem where an update took ages for no apparent reason
and nobody else was holding locks on the table. I dropped and recreated the
primary key constraint and all was well. Of course, I don't know what the
actual cause of the problem was, but my job was to get the developers back
and working as fast as possible.



 You might consider seeing if this solves your problem.
