Hmmm I seem to remember having this problem ages ago using 7.3.2 on a DYNIX/PTX system.

Turned out we had to put the root user in the DBA group in the .login file, altough the root user was already in this group.

The way to do this is to add "newgrp dba" (dba being the dba group name, could be something else on your system) to the end of the .login file (without the quotes), only feature of this is you now have to logout of the root account twice!!
