Oracle runnig too many processes ?

Hi All.
Do you know how many Oracle processes should run per DB ? cause my server is running slow lately , and I saw many processes running under it.
I monitored the processes on my machine (Sun solaris , oracle 8.1.5 ) and found more then one process
per DB.

Do I run too much processes ?
Can I avoid running some of them ?
