Error msgs from Oracle libs

Hi,

I'm not Oracle oriented but I'm working with some guys that may have a problem. Basically, we have an application that has Oracle 8.0.6 libraries linked in. We open a connection to connect to an Oracle database of either 7.3.4, 8.0.x, 8.1.5. We leave the connection open and at set intervals (1 min - 5 min) we run a query to the db. If the database is down, we expect to capture the Oracle library generated error message indicating the db is unavailable.

What's happening is that the message is randomly not being generated. This is causing our app to crash. Any ideas? BTW, we're running on Solaris 2.5.1 and 2.6.
