I think it is actually Digital/Compaq that have decide not to continue porting NT to Alpha and not a MS decision. If I have understand it correctly it is the hardware vendors who pays for the port of NT (I think the same applied to the PowerPc platform).
To bad for those who had decided to run MS SQL Server on Alpha. Now they have to use an Intel platform or choose another db. Of course, one of the big reasons to use use Oracle is o/s and hardware independance.
