Some of the Oracle8 config tools are Java-based. Seems these tools have a problem if you are not running at least 256 colors and 800x600 on the machine where you are invoking the tools (probably the server). I was able to goose my Compaq server to 256 colors (still 640x480) and get rid of the problem, even though the Oracle Problem report I saw said both colors and resolution needed to be changed. I could not get rid of the error running 800x600 at 16 colors - so the color definitely needs to be set higher.
