i'd venture to disagree with you

• i *always* test the integrity of my exports
• i periodically test the integrity of my backups. you don't have to restore the entire database to test this -- just system and one or two random tablespaces, recover them and make sure it works. Occasionally you have to do this due to programmer error (need to recover a tablespace to get back that dropped table but you don't want to PIT recovery the entire tablespace -- just that table).

Lots of people do.
