Yes of course, you can have much more than 64kBytes.
The reason why your instance not start could be an inapropiate initxxxx.ora
after
you made your modification in the init file.
Note that this parameter is for each session , so if you put , let's say
sort_area_size=1000000
and you have 10 users connected in the same time, who need sorting
operation, on the server yuo will need more than SGA, another 10*10000000
space!
So, increase the value carefuly, see the results.
