Oracle internal numbers are all proprietary packed floating point numbers with
maximum precision of about 38 places and can take up to twenty something bytes
of storage. I don't think this is operating system dependant until you
extract the data into an external program variable in which case you can use
the OS
native data types like 64 bit long to hold one of these converted
packed numbers.
