Oracle 8 Still Hosed With Respect to Column Reconfiguration

Have I missed it or is Oracle 8 still the biggest pain when it comes to column reconfiguration (drop, resize, rename).

I understand that there is a lot of internal ties such as constraints but it makes the product so rigid. It is, in my view, too steep a price to pay. The windows tool they ship, Schema Manager, should have this built in ASAP!!!
