As far as I know there are at least 2 other ways of setting the ORACLE_SID environment variable on NT(4.0).

  1. At the NT command prompt type:
    > SET ORACLE_SID=<SID_NAME>
    This will only hold for this one command prompt session - I've also noticed intermittent problems with case sensitivity when doing this. To ensure you have been successful type SET at the command prompt and you'll get all environment variables listed.
  2. Double click the SYSTEM icon in control panel, select the ENVIRONMENT tab and add a new system (or user) variable ORACLE_SID with the value of your new sid. This will be more permanent and will save you having to continually perform step 1.
