Separate applications on the same server

If you were running multiple applications (ie, an inventory app and a financial app) on one Oracle database server, what is the best way to setup the database instances?
Is it best to run each application in its own Oracle database instance? Or is it ok to run both applications in the same instance? Is it taboo to run two different applications in the same instance? What criteria would you use to decide between each option?
