I can't resist this one...:-) I recently left Oracle Consulting after 2
years in the NYC area. There are a couple of comments I have for
you:1. As an independent consultant, I get many more requests for DBA
work, than Des2K...and I know both.
2. Designer 2000 is a very powerful product, but also an extremely
convoluted & frustrating one. I've spent many hours at client sites,
trying to develop systems that Oracle Practice managers & managing
principals had promised to the client...based on some sales blurb or
Des2K white paper they read, that promised a lot more than the product
could deliver. My blood pressure was at its all-time high, whenever I
was doing Des2K projects.
3. If you're under the impression that taking a consulting position with
Oracle will get you more training opportunities...guess again. I almost
blew chocolate milk out my nostrils when I read that one...Oracle
consultants have 1 purpose in life(according to the MP or PM's that they
work for)...and thats to be BILLABLE....that means...if a job comes
along...and your supposed to go for training that week....you lose. It
happened to me & everyone in my office on a regular basis.
4. If you're thinking about becoming an Oracle Services consultant...get
ready to be flying on a lot of coach flights...to towns you don't want
to go to...eating hotel food you don't like...and spending your Friday
evenings and Sunday afternoons watching in-flight movies. Oh...and one
more thing...expect a hassle for any book or periodical that you try to
expense on Oracle...
As I said, I did my time on the rock-pile for 2 years in one of the busiest offices. There were a lot of good people there that I worked with, and quite a few blankety-blanks too. I hate to make it sound like its not a good place to work, because if you want to get some tough experience, then by all means do it. It won't be the dream that the Oracle people have painted for you...that I can promise. Particularily if you're going to be out in the field in Consulting Services.
I'll tell you one thing though...If I'm staffing up a project that has my name on it...I'll take a good Oracle DBA any day over a Designer 2000 consultant...
Good luck,
