The NXX (exchange) portion of the phone number. In the North American Numbering Plan, the NPA (area code) and NXX (exchange) combination is to the phone company as ZIP code is to the postal service -- or at least it used to be, before the advent of local number portability, overlays, and lots of other related changes.
