I am running Oracle 8i on NT 4.0 sp6.

When I installed Oracle it set up two services which start automatically for me:

  1. OracleOraHome81TNSListener (listens to tnsnames.ora)
  2. OracleServiceGLOBAL (this is my only database, called 'global')

Action: Check if both services are running on your machine.

On my intallation, I have to enter three different net service names (host string), depending on the which application I am trying to start. For simplicity, say that I am logging on as system/manager with all three of these applications. Note that host name of my NT box is 'altura'.

     Application Service Name (Host)
     ------------- -----------------------
1. SQL*Plus global
2. SQL*Plus Worksheet altura:1521:global
3. WebDB globalwebdb.world

In my installation, WebDB is in a different Oracle home and uses a different tnsnames.ora file. That explains the different host name with WebDB. Having to supply the instance name 'global' when starting SQL*Plus is straightforward. But when starting SQL*Plus Worksheet (comes with Oracle Enterprise Manager), I am obliged to give it the full <hostname>:<port>:<service>.

Action: Check your tnsnames.ora file and experiment with host names when you log in.

Let me know if this was of any help.

Chris
