i have had much luck just using the oracle client cd.... you do not really
need SQL*Plus, dont need DCOM, or much documentation....it's easy, swear.
if you load the Oracle client, you will have SQL*Net and Oracle's ODBC driver... that is all you need....
add a System Data Source, name it something straightforward like Oracle, and enter the TNSNames entry for your box - eg, Connect: MYOracleBox (where MYOracleBox is the paragraph header that points to your server- dont need the .WORLD part)...
that is it, senor.... when you want to connect using Excel, just specify your Oracle ODBC source - that is it, except the user / password stuff....
