A DBA ( Data Base Administrator ), as the title would suggest, is responsible for the set-up and maintenance of an Oracle database(s) : Depending on the particular position ( only one, member of a structured staff...) the DBA has, more or less, the responsibility for keeping the data in the database available, efficient, and secure and insuring that all operations against that database comply with the requirements of the installation as to transaction speed and integrity, access methodology, and availability.....

In a large IT shop, these duties are often split among several DBAs, with one or two designated as 'Senior' DBAs who are responsible for the initial installation and mission critical tasks;the other DBAs will be assigned tasks like backup, monitoring and user setup for one or more databases or instances.....

In my humble opinion, most programmers are not happy being full-time DBAs since, programmers usually like to write and test code....DBAs have little opportunity to do that on a regular basis....

Hope it helps,
