When using a new, fresh, clean ora home to perform oop patching you may hit errors, should the latest patches require you to rollback some old sql patches.

This may be the case if the latest RU overlays some one-off you previously installed.

I'd rather use opatch to clean older patches: it has became supported and looks safer to me
