Let the “religious wars” begin 😊

Seriously – Jeremiah was (as usual) spot on – “it depends”. That said, Jeff’s response is also POTENTIALLY correct, but not a “given”.

I work for Quest Software – we have tools that can assist with data management, movement and monitoring in multiple database environments, including PostgreSQL, Oracle and others.

We’ve seen spectacular successes as well as dismal failures; and the root causes for both are often NOT the underlying technology.

Absent any additional facts, and all other things being relatively equal, which they almost never really are, as I’m sure you’ve already discovered, the licensing costs for PostgreSQL will almost certainly be less than the licensing costs for Oracle.

Is Oracle worth the extra cost? It depends…..

Here are some open ended question for the group…We are starting to look at migrating our databases from Oracle to PostgreSQL. I know nothing about PostgreSQL.

Has anyone done a pro’s and con’s list of Oracle vs. PostgreSQL? Anyone have a lesson’s learned list from migrating from Oracle to PostgreSQL? Any thoughts/comments on PostgreSQL?
I kind of think that you get what you pay for…wouldn’t that mean that Oracle would outperform PostgreSQL in every way?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Tom
