This thread is chock full of the divergent definitions of DBA that Oracle VLDB and MOSES tried to wrap their hands around a while ago - before Codd's twelve rules reached their silver anniversary.
Even before Codd's model, if the pre-design application functional goal and architecture team didn't have a DBA to make sure the (IMS? Codasyl? HiSAM? database structure) made sense, it was considered an amateur prototype. Now THAT DBA was probably someone who had been a developer and/or sysprog for half a decade, ran a team, was senior in the organization, but was offered the chance to bring institutional knowledge to the technical efforts without having to manage people.
Sigh. I should dredge up the definitions and job descriptions, but I'd rather spend time with my grandchildren.
Anyway, most of the problems with being a DBA stem from a mismatch between what a particular DBA thinks the current position duties are and what the DBA managers think are the duties.
So talk to each other.

Reminds me of a manager I had who insisted that "Most DBAs are arsonists. They set a fire so they can put it out, or at best, stand by and watch while someone else, usually a developer, strikes a match. Then they can play hero and put out the fire".
Mladen is spot on, MUCH harder to be PROACTIVE than reactive.
And there's more need than ever for people who UNDERSTAND not only data; but the implications (increasingly hazardous) of "getting it wrong".
At the end of the day, AI and Machine Learning are nothing more than pattern matching and curve fitting, and there are humans "behind the curtains" at every step.

This sounds like a self-serving platitude of the first order. Do you have any data to base such a bold claim on? Without supporting data and a comprehensive survey, such a claim about "no org" is just a pure charlatanism. DBA is a database subject-matter expert (SME) and there are several kinds of DBA. I am a development DBA who tries to predict performance of the software product that I support before it hits the customer. My role is not reactive. There is also an infrastructure DBA, who is the person to call when your application receives "ORA-00257 Archiver error. Connect internal only until freed" at 3AM or when you receive ORA-01555 because your UNDO tablespace is too small. Those are relatively simple, although ORA-01555 can be really tricky to debug. However, you can get all kinds of ORA-00600 or ORA-07445 and then you need someone who knows how the database works. It's much harder to be a DBA than a charlatan who speculates about what no org wishes or doesn't wish.
