That file is quite easy to fubar and now Oracle has provided a tool (see Mladen’s email.)  

I would resort to manual editing only a) if the tool fails or b) I was in a time warp to before the tool existed and Oracle routinely fubar’d the inventory all by itself.  

In either case, of course, preserve the original somewhere essentially air gapped from where the Oracle software can crawl before you make any required changes in an editing mode that shows normally invisible characters.

Why not?

I've had oracle support people tell me to edit it during cleanup of patching train wrecks. The file describes homes and if the home is gone, don't describe it?
