How well is it instrumented? Not nearly as well as Oracle, but for some
reason I never had a real problem with SQL execution since PG uses a
cost based optimizer exclusively.

But how well are those open source databases instrumented ? How deep under the hood can you look when stuff doesn't run as fast as you'd like it to (other than reading the source code to try and figure out what's going on) ? For me that is one of the most important features of an rdbms database - and Oracle's instrumentation kicks butt :)

If you are going to use an open source db I'd highly recommend PostGreSql over ALL of the other offerings out there, particularly MySql.

I did a basic functional test, not a smoke test. I was able to install it and set up the replication without much heartache. Their technical support was quite good especially compared to a similar company's product that we evaluated.
