Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Connecting...ORA-03134: Connections to this server version are no longer supported.
I'm pretty sure the dividing line is 8.1.7.3 for backward compatibility, but
that is based on experimentation, not notes.
9i based client software should be able to connect to both 8.1.6 and 10.x if
that is a solution for your case,
or except for some really trivial stuff (if I recall correctly, so test it)
the upgrade to 8.1.7.x is pretty easy. You should not even have to relink
8.1.6 client executables if you are relying on them to continue using the
database that would be upgraded to 8.1.7, but you *might* have to keep an
8.1.6 or 8.1.7 listener running for them to connect through.
To connect to 10.x though, software older than 8.1.7.x (where x=3, I think) will need to be relinked (but that does not appear to be the direction you' re going.)
good luck!

Any thoughts gang? I'll be so glad when the 8.1.6 is all gone.

Has anyone gotten this error and found a way to resolve it?
I am trying to connect from a 10.2.0.1 client to an 8.1.6.1 database.
This is for the migration of the old prodwhs/ckprod2 databases on the old Sun server D21 (8.1.6.1 database).
The user wants to write a program to access the tables on the old D21 server to test with and then later test against the new DE1 (10g) database.
I looked in metalink and the notes in there indicated that this problem should have been resolved with the 10.2 client software but it does not seem to work.
Any ideas?
Thanks...Lisa
