LOL. But seriously, we've been using standby databases and then Dataguard since v. 7.2 here and it works very well.

The automatic log shipping feature really came into its own in 9i, I wasn't very happy with it in 8i (we continued to use our scripts for that version). As of 9i it's very easy to switch back and forth between production and standby instances, graceful failovers were still easy in 8i, just a lot more steps.

The only real consideration is what degree of data loss you can accommodate since if your production database explodes you will lose any data in the current redo log and any archive logs that have not yet been fully copied over to the standby. We force a log switch every 15 minutes to minimize potential data loss.
