RHEL3ES
Current kernel; 2.4.21-4.ELsmp

SA work is not my cup of tea...I know enough to be dangerous. My SA is having issues upgrading our kernel from 2.4.21-4 to 2.4.21-15. Below is his emails, comments, and errors sent to me. Any thoughts?...anything obvious.

Again, I know this is way off topic, but I'm not on any Linux list and I know a lot of you are really Linux savvy. Also, I'm a child in this area and anything overly technical will go over my head, but I will pas it on...I have personally upgraded or changed kernels two or three times in my life and that was a while ago (SuSE 7).

Thanks,

The error is caused because
"/lib/modules/$kernel/modules.dep
does not exist for the kernel i am trying to upgrade to. But i don;'t know how that gets generated...

I was able to compile the kernel. that was painful, but now I have the following issue. I am stucked at the point where I have to create the RAM disk Like so mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.21-15.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-15.Elsmp And it fails saying the following
[root_at_db05 boot]# mkinitrd initrd-2.4.21-15.ELsmp.img 2.4.21-15.ELsmp No dep file found for kernel 2.4.21-15.Elsmp I wanted to have both lilo.conf.anaconda and grub.conf so that Ivan can lean both loaders. For grub I need the RAM disk and I cannot get it to work. I have never had these many issues compiling a freaking kernel...

All,
We followed my instructions on the kernel upgrade but the RPM failed to put the image file under /boot I then after about 1 hour of dealing with this issue and downloading other kernel RPMs, decided to download a source RPM for manual compilation. I have been having a great deal of trouble trying to compile this kernel.
